12 kayak adventures you must try [Pacific Northwest]

Today I was talking with a friend about how recreational kayaking has brought so much joy and peace into my life, and what she really wanted to know was, But why? Tell me more?

So I’ve curated this list of 12 unforgettable experiences of mine from years of kayaking the Pacific Northwest, that really showcase why flat water kayaking in this region is an absolute must for your adventure travel bucket list.

Whether it’s marveling at the cosmos while paddling under the twinkling stars, or encountering playful seals by your kayak, each experience promises to deepen your connection with nature and leave you with unforgettable memories!

1. Paddling under the Milky Way

Kayaking at night under the expansive Milky Way in the world’s largest dark sky zone was truly a bucket list experience for me. The stars and constellations above, and the quiet around you, make for an otherworldly journey that you’ll treasure forever. My first night kayak tour, but definitely not my last, was documented here during a meteor shower guided tour.

2. Mount Hood’s reflection on Trillium Lake

Kayaking on Trillium Lake offers one of the most iconic views of Mount Hood on a clear day. The mountain’s reflection on the crystal-clear water is so perfect, it feels like you’re paddling through a postcard.

3. Dramatic sunset views in the Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge is famous for its breathtaking skies, river views, and mountain views. Paddling the Gorge at sunset, with the walls of the gorge lit up in the colors of the setting sun, was such a peaceful and awe-inspiring experience.

4. Basalt rock formations at the Willamette Narrows

Kayaking through the Willamette Narrows, you’re surrounded by towering basalt rock formations, remnants of ancient volcanic activity. This geological marvel provides a stunning backdrop for navigating an unforgettable paddle through water channels and coves.

5. Observing bald eagles in the wild

Imagine the thrill of seeing bald eagles in their natural habitat as you glide silently through the waters. This majestic sighting, not uncommon in the Pacific Northwest if you know where to paddle, offers a special moment of connection with nature that you just can't get anywhere else.

6. Kayaking a salt-to-fresh water elevator in Seattle

Have you ever taken a kayak through a water elevator? At the Ballard Locks, you can experience the unique mix of engineering and natural beauty, making your transition from saltwater to freshwater an unforgettable adventure.

7. Family tandem kayaking in a National Wildlife Refuge

Family kayaking time on the water, especially in a national wildlife refuge, is about more than just paddling – it’s about creating lasting memories and learning about the delicate ecosystems we’re part of. I love kayaking with my husband and kids!

8. Encountering harbor seals in Shilshole Bay

Observing harbor seals face-to-face (and from a safe distance) while kayaking in Shilshole Bay is as delightful as it is inspiring. These ethical interactions highlight the charm and calm of the bay, making every paddle a discovery. Plus baby seals are the cutest.

9. Sea lion surprise in Oregon City

Nothing matches the surprise and delight of a sea lion popping up near your kayak! This unexpected and amazing encounter occurred during my first paddle in Oregon City at the base of the Willamette Falls.

10. Sunset kayaking with Mom

There’s something magical about sharing a sunset kayak ride with someone you love. My mom (who was visiting me in Oregon) and I found serenity and joy in the quiet beauty of the setting sun in the Columbia River Gorge, a perfect ending to our day together. We still talk about how beautiful and fun it was paddling on a tandem kayak that evening.

11. Paddling past movie-worthy floating homes

Maybe you fell in love with the romantic charm of floating houses while watching Sleepless in Seattle too. There are so many beautiful floating homes in the Pacific Northwest, but the ones in downtown Portland on the Willamette River near Ross Island provide a picturesque scene that enhances the urban kayaking experience.

12. Kayaking at the Base of a Famous Volcanic Eruption

If you're on the hunt for a unique kayaking experience in Washington State, one of my top day trips of last year was paddling on Coldwater Lake. Formed after Mt. St. Helens' big volcanic eruption in 1980, this lake offers a lot more than just pretty views… We saw a bald eagle, Black-tailed deer, elk tracks, & more fascinating wildlife, as well as enjoyed epic mountain and fall leaf peeping views.

Hopefully some of my favorite personal kayaking memories here have inspired you as much as they’ve brought a smile to my face. Whether solo or with loved ones, each kayaking trip is a journey back to what’s real and beautiful in the world… See you on the water soon, where your own unforgettable story awaits!
