These kayak stickers could save your life

Ever heard of “Scan if Found” stickers? I hadn’t until recently – and now I’m amplifying their importance with you all.

In this article, we’ll explain what these kayak stickers are, why should get one, how they can save the lives of flatwater kayakers and paddlers of all kinds… and even where you can order yours (possibly for free!).

What are “Scan if Found” kayak stickers?

A "Scan if Found" sticker contains a QR code that, when scanned, provides critical information about you, your emergency contacts, and any pertinent medical information. (ACA partnered with HOST Hawaii and the U.S. Coast Guard to create the “Scan If Found” sticker program).

These stickers easily adhere to your kayak (or SUP, canoe, and so forth, if that’s more your thing) so they’re visible to first responders or any good citizens who may happen to find your boat.

How they work

We all became quite familiar with QR codes during the pandemic when we were all sitting outside and scanning table codes for menus. But in case you need a refresher, to open up the data locked behind a QR code, you open up your phone’s camera and get close to the QR code (as if you’re going to take a photo).

You’ll see a link pop up as an option on your phone. When you click on that link, you’ll be directed via your web mobile browser to anonymous digital data related to that kayak and its owner.

And for boat owners, you don’t need to create an account for this QR code system to work!

Here’s a video that shows you how “Scan if Found” stickers work in action.

Why you need the "Scan if Found" sticker for your kayak

Imagine you're out on a serene lake, enjoying the tranquility of nature while paddling on your kayak. Suddenly, an unforeseen event occurs, and you find yourself in need of assistance.

No account is needed to use this program, just scan a sticker and you’re connected.

Whether it's a medical emergency, getting lost, or encountering rough weather conditions, having the "Scan if Found" sticker prominently displayed on your kayak can be a lifesaver when scanned. This digital information is invaluable to first responders and rescuers, allowing them to quickly assess the situation and provide the necessary assistance.

5 benefits of kayak stickers

  1. Rapid Response: First responders can access vital information immediately, saving precious time during emergencies.

  2. Peace of Mind: Knowing that you have an extra layer of safety while kayaking brings peace of mind to both you and your loved ones.

  3. Accessibility: The sticker is free for ACA members, making it easily accessible to all flatwater kayakers looking to enhance their paddling safety measures.

  4. Emergency Contacts: Ensure that your emergency contacts are reachable when you need them most, even in remote locations.

  5. Gear Recovery: As a bonus, these stickers can help reunite a stolen or lost water vessel with its owner.

How to get a "Scan if Found" kayak sticker

Getting your own "Scan if Found" sticker is easy (and free for ACA members!). Simply visit the ACA website or contact your local ACA representative to request your sticker. I was able to easily order mine yesterday for free, and the limit was a quantity of 3 stickers.

Once you receive your stickers in the mail, affix it prominently on your kayak so that it's easily visible to anyone who may come to your aid in an emergency.

In conclusion, don't overlook the importance of safety when enjoying flatwater kayaking, and these clever stickers can really help in emergency situations (or, you know, the unfortunate spot if your kayak gets stolen).

Get your "Scan if Found" sticker today and paddle with confidence, knowing that you're prepared for any situation that may arise on the water. Order stickers now.
