10 guided kayak tours we want to do in 2024 [Pacific Northwest]

I just got back from an action-packed week searching for wildlife in Costa Rica, and one of the takeaways of my trip was this: well-reviewed guided Viator tours rock.

So now that I’m back in the States and starting to plan Pacific Northwest kayaking season trips and weekends, I’ve been combing the Viator site, seeing what else captures my interest… And we just enjoyed one of these very tours in August, 2024, that was absolutely epic…. Details below!

Top-rated guided tours in Oregon

  • Guided Half-Day Kayak Tour, Oregon: This 4-hour journey through the Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge allows you to glide through a peaceful river setting surrounded by lush, old-growth forests. It’s an exceptional way to connect with nature quietly and perhaps spot local wildlife like river otters and various waterfowl. The tour's gentle pace makes it ideal for photography enthusiasts or those looking to unwind on the water.

    • Why we like this one: Paddlers will learn about the First Nations of this area, the Klamath and Modoc peoples and have the opportunity to spot a rare plant (the Wocus). We also love old-growth forests, and half-day tours are a nice way to build up kayaking endurance for water adventures all summer long.

  • Small-Group Kayak Tours on the Salmon River Estuary, Otis, Oregon: Dive deep into the biodiversity of the Salmon River estuary. This 3-hour tour offers close encounters with habitats critical for migratory birds and local fish species, providing a living classroom experience. Learn about the ecological importance of estuaries while enjoying the calm, flat waters perfect for beginners.

    • Why we like this one: Wooden kayaks! And each one requires 500+ hours to make! It’s also pretty unique and cool kayaking with salmon and learning about their importance to our PNW ecosystems. This is also one of the few Viator tours along the Oregon coast, ideal for folks visiting the popular beach towns of Canon Beach, Seaside, Rockaway Beach, Neskowin, or Lincoln City.

    • Our caveats: The reviews on this one are nearly two years old. Ideally we’d like to see some 2023 reviews post. Still, we can’t stop thinking about those wooden kayaks…

  • Brookings Ocean Kayak Paddle, Oregon: Set off from the charming coastal town of Brookings and paddle along rugged sea cliffs and sandy beaches. Encounter marine life including sea lions and coastal birds, making it a thrilling experience for wildlife watchers. This tour offers a unique perspective of Oregon's wild coastline, appealing to those seeking a bit of adventure.

    • Why we like this one: Coastal creatures, yes please. We’ve also never been to Brookings… and a 2-hour, 3-mile kayak adventure really is a perfect duration and distance for average recreational kayakers.

  • Cascade Lakes Kayaking Tour, Bend, Oregon: Kayak among the stunning volcanic peaks of the Cascade Range, reflected in the clear blue waters of the lakes. This tour not only offers mesmerizing views but also opportunities to learn about the volcanic history of the region. It’s perfect for those who appreciate geology and the serene beauty of alpine environments.

  • Why we like this one: Bend is one of my absolute favorite places in Oregon, and we’ve kayaked Paulina Lake in the past… Having the opportunity to paddle more cascade lakes with a local guide sounds like a dream. Also we learned a bit about volcanic history when we kayaked near Mt. St. Helens, and it’s fascinating stuff.

  • Kayaking in Deception Pass State Park, San Juan Islands: Navigate through the dramatic landscapes where the tides of Puget Sound meet rocky passageways. This tour is steeped in history, offering views of historic bridges and tales of local lore. The dynamic waters here provide an exciting challenge for more adventurous paddlers.

    • Why we like this one: We just took this tour in August, 2024, during our week-long stay in Whidbey Island. It was incredible! An expert guide, serene, glass-like waters, and a beautiful paddle through a bull kelp forest. We even saw a harbor seal and lots of sea cucumbers! • Full Day Kayaking Tour in The San Juan Islands: This comprehensive tour takes you on a detailed exploration of the archipelago, revealing hidden spots not accessible by larger boats. It’s an intimate experience with the natural world, where you might encounter pods of whales or watch seals playing in the kelp beds.

    • Why we like this one: San Juan Island is incredibly beautiful, and this full day tour is packed with excitement – and includes a homemade lunch on the beach! This tour has received 200+ five-star reviews and a “Badge of Excellence” on Viator. One of our guest author recently shared about her experience sea kayaking in the San Juan Islands, and it looked like an amazing experience.

  • Bioluminescence Nighttime Bay Kayak Tour: Glide over the glowing waters of Laguna Grande in this unique 5-hour tour, where you can observe the rare phenomenon of bioluminescence through the bottom of your kayak. This night-time journey weaves through mangrove forests, illuminating the water's surface with every paddle stroke. Not only will you see the light shows created by microscopic organisms, but you'll also learn about the fragile ecosystem that supports this spectacular display. Ideal for kayaking families and participants of all ages, this tour combines natural wonder with ecological awareness.

    • Why we like this one: We are newly fascinated with safe kayaking tours at night and have been wanting to observe bioluminescence for awhile now. Added perk for offering pick-up and drop-off. Reviews rave about the guides.

    • Our caveats: We’re partial to bioluminescence tours with clear bottom kayak boats, and this doesn't appear to be the case on this one.

  • West Seattle Sunset Sea Kayak Tour: Experience the tranquility of a Pacific Northwest sunset over the Olympic Mountains, casting golden hues on the waters. This tour is particularly magical for its picturesque sunsets and the peaceful evening ambiance, perfect for winding down the day.

    • Why we like this one: This is an epic spot for Seattle views for a nice, breezy 2-hour excursion. Alki Beach also has a lively restaurant, bar, record shop, and music scene, so it’s a fun place to stay and play (and hey, you could run into Eddie Vetter if you’re lucky).

    • Our caveats: It’s a bit on the pricey side for 2 hours, but still, it seems like bucket list fun.

Best Reviewed Kayak Tours in Idaho

  • Guided Kayak Tour to Shoshone Falls, Idaho: Experience the power and beauty of Shoshone Falls, which towers at 212 feet and spans nearly 1,000 feet across. This tour not only offers spectacular views but also delves into the historical significance of the area to local Native American tribes and early settlers.

  • Why we like this one: Another “Badge of Excellence” Viator tour, the photos of this experience remind me of Willamette Falls base kayaking and the reviews are excellent… kayaking sounds like a great way to visit the “Niagara Falls of the West.” It also is reasonably priced in our opinion.

  • Kayak Rental and Transport, Silver Creek, Idaho: Customize your adventure by exploring this area at your own pace. This option is perfect for those who prefer solitude or wish to spend more time photographing some of the less-traveled stretches of the river, where wildlife abounds and historical sites beckon exploration.

  • Why we like this one: Sometimes you just want to own your day, and it’s nice for a local business to handle the kayak rental and transport for you, and provide expert advice on where to paddle along Silver Creek. A recent reviewer even saw a wild Moose from their kayak boat!
