Before purchasing an Oru folding kayak, consider these 5 key questions: 1) What is your intended use for the kayak? 2) Do you prioritize portability and storage? 3) What is your budget? 4) What is your experience level and skill set? 5) How important is durability and longevity? By addressing these factors, you'll make an informed decision that best suits your needs and preferences.

Now let’s break down those questions even further…

Key questions to ask yourself before buying an Oru Kayak

What is my intended use for the kayak?

Oru folding kayaks are versatile and designed for various flatwater activities such as sea kayaking, fishing, and recreational paddling. Consider how you plan to use the kayak, as this will help you determine the most suitable model for your needs. Some models may offer better stability, speed, or storage capacity depending on the activity.

Here at Flatwater Kayak Club, we focus on – you guessed it – flat water kayaks.

We give quick need-to-know info on the kayak models before, but if you need a full, in-depth kayak research resource, here’s our comparison guide to all Oru calm water kayaks.

Do I prioritize portability and storage?

Oru kayaks are known for their compact, foldable design, which allows for easy transport and storage. This can be especially beneficial if you have limited space or if you plan to travel with the kayak frequently. However, if portability is not a top priority, you may want to explore other kayak options that may offer different features or price points. For me, the compact nature of this lightweight kayak was the biggest driver for my buying decision.

What is my budget?

Oru kayaks tend to be more expensive than traditional hard shell kayaks due to their innovative design and engineering. I’ve paid right around $1,000 for each of mine (three years apart, same Oru model but different versions).

Assess your budget to determine if an Oru kayak is a feasible option for you, and consider the additional expenses that need to be factored in, such as paddles, life jackets, a dry bag, and other needed kayaking accessories.

What is my experience level and skill set?

While Oru kayaks cater to a range of skill levels, it's crucial to choose a model that aligns with your experience, paddling ability, and kayaking intent.

Some models may be more beginner-friendly, offering greater stability and ease of use for calm waters, while others are designed for more advanced paddlers seeking speed and performance on choppier waters.

How important is durability and longevity?

Oru folding kayaks are made from a custom polypropylene material that is lightweight, strong, and resistant to UV damage – and they’re tested up to 20,000 folds.

However, as with any kayak, proper Oru care and maintenance are essential to ensure its longevity. Consider if you are willing to invest in maintaining the kayak and if the Oru's material and construction meet your expectations for durability and storage, especially when compared to traditional hard-shell kayaks.

My first Oru Inlet lasted over two years of significant use. While it still technically paddles fine and doesn’t appear to have cracks in the material, it’s showing the wear & tear and I felt the time bomb on it ticking, so I bought a new one this season.
