These kayak stickers could save your life
Ever heard of “Scan if Found” stickers? I hadn’t until recently – and now I’m amplifying their importance with you all.
In this article, we’ll explain what these kayak stickers are, why should get one, how they can save the lives of flatwater kayakers and paddlers of all kinds… and even where you can order yours (possibly for free!).
What are “Scan if Found” kayak stickers?
A "Scan if Found" sticker contains a QR code that, when scanned, provides critical information about you, your emergency contacts, and any pertinent medical information. (ACA partnered with HOST Hawaii and the U.S. Coast Guard to create the “Scan If Found” sticker program).
These stickers easily adhere to your kayak (or SUP, canoe, and so forth, if that’s more your thing) so they’re visible to first responders or any good citizens who may happen to find your boat.
How they work
We all became quite familiar with QR codes during the pandemic when we were all sitting outside and scanning table codes for menus. But in case you need a refresher, to open up the data locked behind a QR code, you open up your phone’s camera and get close to the QR code (as if you’re going to take a photo).
You’ll see a link pop up as an option on your phone. When you click on that link, you’ll be directed via your web mobile browser to anonymous digital data related to that kayak and its owner.
And for boat owners, you don’t need to create an account for this QR code system to work!
Here’s a video that shows you how “Scan if Found” stickers work in action.
